Gargas interviewed raiders and some of the POWs for his book. All of the raiders expressed t h e i r d i s a p p o i n t m e n t that the camp was empty. Although they were not rescued, the mission improved their conditions and restored their hope.Before the raid, the POWs were scattered in different camps under horrible conditions, many in solitary confinement. "They were placed in large rooms where there were 40 or 50 of them. They could finally see American faces," Gargas said. "They realized they were not forgotten, that someone was looking for them. The raid is considered an example of a well-executed joint forces mission, according to a news release from the Son Tay Raiders Association. About 116 aircraft and three aircraft carriers were involved. Brig. Gen. LeRoy J.
